1 Deetlefs Estate Muscat d‘Alexandrie 1974 5 Stars (1)
Finally managed to acquire my own bottle of this vintage of this rare delight. Had the opportunity to taste this vintage only once before...truly exceptional....what more can one say about this exceptional wine??
2 Chateau D‘Arche Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois Superior 2002 5 Stars (1)
Chateau D`Arche is one of the finest examples from Haut Medoc. Classified a cru bourgeois superior, the wine is a leader in its classification group. a smooth, elegant and refined wine from Mahler Besse family, as co-owners of Chateau Palmer, the family has access to the finest wine-making expertise and resources in Bordeaux.
3 Mahler Besse Taja Excelencia 2005 5 Stars (1)
This bodega is owned by the same family that owns Chateau Palmer, and the wine is certainly produced to the same high standards. I am amazed by the wines elegance, complexity, smoothness and depth of flavour.
4 Chateau Palmer Palmer 2000 5 Stars (1)
5 Chateau Palmer Palmer 1961 5 Stars (1)
5 stars plus...1961 is the best vintage from Bordeaux last century. Fine magazine rated the top 100 wines from 1961 and the Palmer `61 came in at no.3 receiving 99 points after Petrus 61 and Latour 61 which both received 100 points...personally after trying a bottle of this recently,it gets 100 points in my books...
6 Chateau Palmer Palmer 1945 5 Stars (1)
7 Chateau Palmer Alter Ego de Palmer 2000 5 Stars (1)
A star vintage from Bordeaux. This wine was drinking superbly a few years ago but has closed down again as it moves into its next level of complexity. Can`t wait to try it again in a few years when it opens up again and delivers a whole new level of complexity.
8 Chateau Siran Chateau Siran (Margaux Cru Bourgeois Exceptional) 2004 5 Stars (1)
This was one of only 12 wines proposed for promotion to Grand Cru Classe in a recent proposed revision of the 1855 classification....I can see why...this wine is certainly way above its classification as a "Cru Bourgeois Exceptional"
9 Cordon Blanc Sauternes Grand Cru 2005 5 Stars (1)
This gets 5 stars for value for money. Never before have I tasted a Sauternes as good at this price...sure there is Rieussec and D`Ychem, but at 10x the price. This Sauternes is very elegant, packed with flavours and aromas of stone fruits like peach and apricot, creme brullee with a wonderful, creamy mouthfeel that coats the palate with flavours that continue to develop and linger...
10 Santa Alicia Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 5 Stars (2)
I have never tasted a smoother Cabernet Sauvignon. very well integrated tannins, flavours and aromas leading to excellent structure and a superb, long finish. Silver medal "best in class" at International Wine and Spirit Competition in London.
11 Santa Alicia Gran Reserva Merlot 2004 5 Stars (2)
IWSC 2007: Trophy winner Best merlot from Chile and Silver Medal best in class.A phenomenal wine, smoothe, elegant, complex with a finish that lingers and lingers as it continues to develop. Incredibly smooth and very well integrated flavours and aromas from its time in 100% new French and American oak.
12 Santa Alicia Millantu Premium Red Wine 2005 5 Stars (1)
I have tried the "Le Dix de los Vascos" from Lafite-Rothschild`s winery in Chile as well as Almaviva from Mouton Rothschild...the Millantu from Santa Alicia gets 5 stars due to its phenomenal price:quality ratio. This is as good and as complex as any of the above at 1/10th the price.
13 Santa Alicia Carmenere Reserva 2007 3 Stars (2)
This reserve carmenere won the gold medal at theInternational Mundus Vini. The Chileans thought carmenere to be merlot until 1994 when genetic testing revealed it was in fact carmenere and not merlot. The characteristics are quite similar but I find the carmenere to be a fruitier more perfumed wine, with slightly more complexity and elegance than the merlot. Flavours jumping out the glass...
14 Chateau Latour Pauillac (1st Growth) 1943 5 Stars (1)
A classic vintage from what I think is the best of the 1st growths....tried one bottle already...could not resist...well this was a 1943 Latour...wow, words do no justice to a wine of this character and complexity...
15 Chateau d‘Ychem Sauternes (1st Growth) 1997 5 Stars (1)
Wow, what a phenomenal wine. There really is no such thing as a bad vintage of D`ychem...liquid gold...the elixir of the Gods...that`s Chateau D`Ychem
16 Chateau Beychevelle St Julien (4th Growth) 1970 5 Stars (1)
17 Taja Gran Reserva 2001 4 Stars (2)
The wines of Spain can be breath-taking in their complexity and elegance, and this is certainly one of those examples from the very underestimated Jumilla DO in south west Spain. Also produced by the the Mahler Besse family, co-owners of Chateau Palmer, the wine is made using Spanish grapes and passion combined with Bordeaux`s exacting standards of quality...one of the nicest wines I have in my collection.
18 Henschke Hill Of Grace Shiraz 2003 5 Stars (1)
Wow, what a wine. Far superior to Grange as far as I am concerned
4 Stars (Very good)

19 Deetlefs Estate Semillon 2005 4 Stars (1)
This "Familie reserve" semillon is one of the best white wines I have tried. A world-class quality wine that can hold its own among the world`s finest white wines.
20 De Grendel Wines Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc 2007 4 Stars (1)
21 Chateau Picard Saint-Estephe Cru Bourgeois 2002 4 Stars (1)
Rated 4 stars by Decanter magazine...so who am I to argue??? Love this wine...
22 Chateau La Couronne St Emilion Grand Cru 2002 4 Stars (1)
Superb wine from another superb vintage, actually this is the 2004 not the 2002.Very smooth, well integrated but firm tannins with loads of flavour and aroma from the higher amounts of merlot typical of the right bank...
23 Santa Alicia Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 2007 4 Stars (1)
Reminiscent of the NZ style of sauvignon...very good with citrus notes from tropical fruit such as kiwi, pineapple and melon.
24 Chateau Duhart-Milon-Rothschild Duhart-Milon 1940 4 Stars (1)
I can see why the Rothschilds (Lafite) wanted to acquire this estate in the 60`s, and did. The wine is superb...the complexity of such an old vintage has reached exquisite levels....a wine not for the faint-hearted....drinking perfectly right now (obviously) but will keep for another 20 years or so in my cellar.
25 Mount Mary Vineyard Quintet 2005 4 Stars (1)
Very good. Had better vintages of Qunitet, but this will do just fine 10 years from now....
26 Chateau Petrus Petrus 1975 4 Stars (1)
27 Chateau Petrus Petrus 1988 4 Stars (1)

31 Mooiplaas Estate Rosalind 2005 3 Stars (1)
Nice
32 Waterford Estate The Jem 2006 3 Stars (1)
I was so looking forward to tasting this wine, but was thoroughly disappointed. the wine is good, but not great and certainly doesn`t measure up to its reputation....great marketing by Waterford using their name to sell their high end wine...but it would be better if the wine actually delivered the goods as well. It`s good, but certainly has a very long way to go...I think I`ll give the other 2 bottles away as gifts - the receiver will be impressed and I won`t have to force myself to drink this highly over-rated wine.
33 Mooiplaas Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 3 Stars (1)
One of the nicest cabs I have tried from SA...
34 Bodega Catena Zapata Chardonnay 2002 3 Stars (1)
The "Angelica Zapata" chardonnay from Catena Zapata is an astiounding chardonnay that can challenge some of the finest from around the world. This wine has a rich, creamy, buttery mouthfeel with flavousr and aromas that jump out of the glass, yet very well integrated making for a superb well-rounded wine. Love it...
2 Stars (Moderately good)

35 Chateau Beauregard Pomerol AC (Ex Bordeaux) 2001 2 Stars (1)
Not one of their better vintages...I have certainly tried better vintages of Beauregard...quite disappointing actually compared to other vintages.
1 Star (Not very good, but not bad)

36 Penfolds Wines Rawsons Retreat Chardonnay 2007 1 Stars (1)
Got given 3 as a present, tried one and will cook with the other 2 when I am not the one to be eating the food....cheap table supermarket wine me thinks.
