Reforming en primeur | Monday, 18 May 2009
In the May Liv-ex Fine Wine Market Report, released last week, we outlined our thoughts on the Bordeaux en primeur system and how it could be improved.

This is obviously a very important issue, with huge ramifications for both the trade and consumers. Therefore we decided to publish it here and make it available to a wider audience. The version below is slightly shorter than the original.

The benefits of the en primeur system ...

The queen bee of UK wine writing, Jancis Robinson, made some salient points when she presented the 2009 Wine Communicators of Australia Lecture in Sydney earlier this year. Many thanks to the subscriber to her Purple Pages who sent me a transcript. Some of her comments rang a bell, as Quasimodo might have said.

On the subject of the endemic rudeness to be found among comments on wine blogs, JR notes "Its like people driving, they just fo ...

2009 - the unbottled vintage | Wednesday, 13 May 2009
It‘s a cruel irony that while winemakers swoon over the quality of vintage 2009, the wine itself may be scarcer than rocking horse droppings as harsh economic realities derail bottling lines.

What a difference six months makes. At the end of last year, Cape contract bottlers were working at 120% capacity. Half a year later and just as whites should be shuffling off the bottling line like new cabinet ministers taking the oath, busin ...

FIFA Fiasco Follow-up | Monday, 11 May 2009
Blogs and the comments they provoke are a bracing wake-up call for wine writers. My story on the FIFA wine tender fiasco last week has received well over 1000 hits to date (making it one of the biggest stories of the year) and a couple of dozen comments (ditto) ranging from the viciously personal (made anonymously, of course) to accusations from an award winning winemaker that the process is corrupt. It was picked up by the international wine med ...

CORRECTED - Women more affected by price of wine than men | Saturday, 9 May 2009
NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - How much does the price of a bottle of wine matter? Quite a lot - to women.

Researchers from the Stockholm School of Economics and Harvard University set out to determine whether knowing how much a bottle of wine cost would affect what people thought of the taste.

They found that disclosing the expensive price of a wine before people tasted it produced considerably higher ratings, although only from wo ...
