Q magazine calls Small Change (the album) the crowning achievement of the "beatnik-glory-meets-Hollywood-noir" phase of Tom Waits' career. Certainly the song Small Change contains some of the sharpest lyrics since Dylan Thomas put down his shot glass and left the White Horse bar in a hearse.

Like "the raconteurs and roustabouts said buddy, come on in, cause, cause the dreams ain't broken down here now, theyre walking with a lim ...

Goodbye, Johnny | Thursday, 11 June 2009
A year ago I was tasting some awesome Rieslings by accident with Johnny Hugel in his shop-cum-tasting room in Riquwihr, Alsace. His death on Tuesday finishes the glass of one of the heroes of Riesling, that noble grape beloved of wine hacks but impossible to sell. I'd had the good fortune to taste Paul Cluver's matchless 2004 vintage Riesling the previous evening along with wine maker Andries Burger at Paul's stone-walled villa on ...

"You think cooking is a cute job, eh? Like Mommy in the kitchen? Well, Mommy never had to face the dinner rush while the orders come flooding in . . . every second counts and you cannot be mommy. - Colette, Ratatouille (2007)

A lot has been written about sexism in the wine and food (specifically restaurant) industry; we tackled the topic ourselves in our October 2008 "Bottle of the Sexes" issue. It came up again for me last Novemb ...

Tinus takes a leek | Saturday, 6 June 2009
The hot topic of conversation on the lawns of the Residence de France in Arcadia this afternoon was whether the plump, cold oysters served in their shells were resting on shallots (suggested by Pieter "bubbles" Ferreira) or a mixture of white and spring onions (proposed by Forti Mazzone of Ritrovo fame).

Since the occasions was Tinus van Niekerk being awarded the Legion d‘Honneur du Merite Agricole, I suggested the green stuff coul ...
