Steenberg Winemaker Selected to Judge
Tuesday, 27 July 2010
Jet-setting young winemaker at Steenberg Vineyards, JD Pretorius (25) was recently invited to participate in the first Concours Mondial du Sauvignon at the renowned Concours Mondial de Bruxelle. This prestigious wine event was held during the Bordeaux Fete le Vin wine fair in France at the end of June, where 512 wines were tasted from Sauvignon Blanc producing countries across the globe. Recognized as an expert on the Sauvignon Blanc varietal, Pretorius was the only South African invited to take part as one of 40 tasters from 10 countries.

Recognizing this young mans passion for the Sauvignon Blanc varietal www.decanter.com, reported JD as saying: Sauvignon is an extremely demanding grape variety to get right, but it is often derided by critics as being too populist, or one-dimensional. Even consumers in South Africa seem to be slowly moving away from it back towards lightly oaked Chardonnays but its a grape variety that deserves better critical recognition when in the hands of the right producers.

Pretorius, who embodies the spirit of the new generation of winemakers, has really made his mark since his appointment as Steenberg winemaker a year ago (June 2009). His hands-on approach and abiding passion for winemaking are proving a great asset for Steenberg Vineyards. Coupled with his excellent grasp of the stock in bottle, tank and barrel, and intuitive insight into his winemaking team, his leadership bodes well for the future of Steenberg one of the most lauded Sauvignon Blanc producers in South Africa.

Just months after taking over the reins as winemaker, he attained a 5-star rating in the 2010 John Platter Guide for the Woolworths Steenberg Reserve Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2009 blend, one of only four Bordeaux white blends to have been awarded 5-stars this year.

Other feathers in Steenbergs cap include its recent inclusion in Grapes Top 20 Wineries this year (www.grape.co.za). Similarly, wine writer Neil Pendock, blogging as the Good Value Guru on http://blogs.timeslive.co.za/pendock/2010/04/18/the-gvg-speaks/ voted Steenberg onto a pick of Top 20 South African wineries, and included the Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc Reserve as one of the countrys Top 10 white wines.

Citing as his favourite white cultivar, Sauvignon Blanc, with Semillon running a close second, Pretorius considers it the ultimate challenge to produce a top quality blend. It is his unaffected appreciation of South African wines that underscores his passion and determination to take local winemaking to new heights.

MORE ABOUT STEENBERG VINEYARDS
Established in 1682 by the legendary Widow Ras, Steenberg is the oldest farm in the Constantia Valley. Steenberg Vineyards is owned by Graham Beck and is rated as one of the top White Wine Cellars in South Africa. The estate produces 50 000 cases of wine annually, with approximately half exported to 15 countries worldwide. Steenberg wines are excellent food wines due to the uniqueness of the terroir, which guarantees varietal expression, firm acidity and longevity. Sauvignon Blanc is currently considered the farms flagship wine and recent accolades include earning five stars in Platters Guide 2008 for the maiden vintage Magna Carta 2007, and the selection of John Loubsers The White Savage Sauvignon Blanc for the prestigious Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction for two years running, fetching a record-breaking price for a white wine in 2008.
