New Waterkloof Vintage
Tuesday, 27 July 2010
Circumstance Cape Coral Mourvdre a stellar summer sip, even the boys will love

Waterkloof has just released the 2010 vintage of its elegantly dry Cape Coral Mourvedre, an internationally famed ros wine and blushing pride of the estates expressive Circumstance collection.

The grapes used for this radiating rose with its luminous pale coral hue, stem from the Stellenbosch region, characterised by mild winters and long hot summers, with the vines planted in cool, deep red soils which provide adequate water for this late ripening variety.

"After a cool growing season, the 2010 vintage was one of the most challenging in years. Strong winds of up to 120 km/h coupled with rain storms had a devastating effect on the size of the yield. Fortunately cool weather prevailed late into summer which had a positive influence on the quality of the grapes," shares Werner Engelbrecht, a traditionalist-by-heart and proprietor of the fine range of European style wines produced at the Waterkloof cellar.

The grapes for the Circumstance Cape Coral Rose 2010 were hand-picked and whole bunch pressed for the gentle extraction of the finest juices, while no further maceration with the skins was allowed. Following time-honoured traditional winemaking techniques in the gravitational cellar and in his pursuit of more individually styled wines, Werner relied on natural, wild yeast fermentation which took three months to complete. The wine was left on the primary lees for another month to add further complexity before bottling.

Werner concedes that at the end only minor fine-tuning was needed in the cellar, leaving it up to the fine and distinctive adventures in terroir to determine the structural finesse and dry character of the Circumstance Cape Coral Ros 2010.

It is a serious, yet delicate Cape rose with sensual flavours of fynbos and red berries ending with a tight, dry finish, with the herbaceous flavours becoming more prominent as the wine ages.

The Circumstance Cape Coral Rose 2010 has great persistence which allows it to be compatible with a wide range of food. Try it with Cep mushroom pastas or truffles, this ros also complements fresh seafood, sushi and spicy dishes. It is a stellar summer sip that even the boys will love.

In South Africa, ros aficionados can get the Circumstance Cape Coral Ros 2010 selling from R85 per bottle at the Waterkloof cellar, selected wine outlets and leading fine dining restaurants.

Waterkloof Estate produces five European style wine collections which include the flagship Waterkloof range; the elegantly expressive Circumstance range; the showy, more fruit-forward Peacock Ridge range, and the False Bay range for everyday wine enjoyment. The estates latest addition is the Circle of Life, an exclusive, expressive white wine that encapsulates the ultimate essence of its amphitheatre of vineyards in the sky.
