The maiden 2011 vintage has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of just 9%. It also boasts 32% fewer kilojoules than the regular 14,3% ABV offering of the same vintage, produced on the famous Uitkyk estate in Stellenbosch and also made by Estelle Lourens.

A 100 ml serving of the new Sauvignon Blanc Light wine is the equivalent of just 290 kilojoules (69 kcal), compared with 426 kilojoules (101 kcal) for the regular wine, representing a significant saving for those watching their waistlines.

"Light but by no means slight, is how we describe this new wine," says Lourens. "It is styled for elegance but certainly doesnt compromise on flavour. Its crisp and fresh with bright, vibrant and herbaceous characters on the nose and taste. What makes it so appealing is its easy-drinking refreshment. It really is a tasty alternative for winelovers who want to or have to watch their intake without having to give up the satisfying enjoyment of a delicious glass of wine. With Sauvignon Blanc, South Africas most popular varietal by far, weve given people greater choice. "

The grapes for the latest offering in the range of mostly novel and often playful wines from Flat Roof Manor, are sourced from three high-lying vineyards on Uitkyk. They were picked in February between 18 and 19 degrees, Balling before the sugar accumulation in the fruit had reached its peak. "These were early harvested grapes, hand-selected for good expression of flavour but before achieving full ripeness."

After crushing, the grapes were immediately separated from the skins and only the free-run juice was fermented. The wine was then left on the lees for four months to flesh out its flavours. Lourens has also added a soupcon of Chenin Blanc to the final blend for greater complexity.

Flat Roof Manor has a history of innovation since its inception a decade ago. It was one of the first ranges to include a Pinot Grigio, well ahead of the recent wave of popularity for this varietal. The wine has developed a strong following for its peach, apricot and litchi profile, so versatile with spicy foods, particularly Asian dishes. Lourens says the 2011 vintage shows all the alluring aromatics of its predecessors.

She also makes an intriguing but very accessible Pinot Rose that is a blend of Pinotage and Pinot Grigio, combining depth of flavour with refreshment. The 2010 vintage is currently on offer locally.

One of the top-selling reds in the range, originally produced exclusively for export, is now available locally; it is the 2009 vintage of the Rhone-style Shiraz/Mourvedre/ Viognier, a medium-bodied, fresh and fruity wine with delicious notes of spice. The components for the blend were individually vinified, using a combination of rotator tanks and open-fermenters. The wines were then aged for 12 months in mostly third-fill 300-litre oak vats for a lighter touch.

"Initially, when we launched the blend, it didnt include any Viognier but weve added it subsequently for the attractive floral and fruit dimension it brings. Like we always say, it adds that trademark je ne sais quoi for which Flat Roof Manor wines have become known."

The 2009 Merlot also spent 12 months in oak. "Its a lively, juicy wine with prominent notes of raspberry and mulberry and a trace of spice, making it wonderfully versatile."

The wines sell for about R 38.00 for the whites and rose, while the reds are expected to retail for around R 49.00.

Dinner At Durbanville Hills To Raise Funds

Dinner At Durbanville Hills To Raise Funds | Tuesday, 26 July 2011

Raise a glass in support of the local community by joining the Durbanville Hills Winery on 16 August in raising funds for the Moresterretjie Creche, a day-care centre established for the children from neighbouring farms.

The evening includes exquisite food and wine as well as entertainment by the sensational electric quartet, Sterling EQ. Its upfront fruitiness seduces the senses with smooth finesse, ending in a delicate, long lingering finish.

"Our terroir here in the belly of the Devon Valley near Stellenbosch, is especially good for growing Merlot. The character, colour and structure of our Merlot grapes all benefit from the cool slopes, especially during the growing season, ensuring a balanced natural acidity, ripe tannins and terrific concentrated flavours," shares winemaker Suzanne Coetzee.

"Weve enjoyed great success with our Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc/Merlot blend over the years thanks to the Merlot component which lends great finesse and refinement to the wine. So it was only fitting to introduce a Merlot to our portfolio. This smooth operator solidly reflects the classic values of all our Clos Malverne wines," Suzanne adds.

The grapes for the Merlot 2009, harvested at optimal ripeness, stem from a vineyard block on west facing slopes with idyllic soils that are deep and well drained and are sheltered from the harsh afternoon sun. Staying true to a time-honoured winemaking tradition, Clos Malverne is one of the few wineries that still uses basket presses, a gentle way of extracting grape juices. "It is bursting with ripe black fruit and layered with notes of violets, dark chocolate and even a savoury hint of rosemary."

This is a wine that calls for grills, roasts and hearty casseroles, he believes, and hastily adds: "And dont be reticent about using dark chocolate or cocoa to flavour the dishes that partner it. They bring out all the wines juicy plum intensity."

He is delighted with the quality of the grapes that come from three Malbec vineyards planted in 2003 on the westerly, slightly warmer slopes on this Stellenbosch estate. "The vines were seven years old at the time of picking and had really come into their own, producing small berries dense with colour and rich, concentrated flavours."

Viljoen did irrigate but only just. "Supplementary drip irrigation is scheduled on the basis of soil moisture content readings. Hydro-neutron probes are planted across all the Malbec vineyards to monitor water levels. Irrigation occurs only when water content falls below pre-determined levels and would otherwise impose too much stress on the vines. We stop again as soon as the moisture reaches optimal levels. Following this approach, we have been able to use 40% less water than in the past. Its a big saving but we are looking for still more ways to curtail water usage."

The probes are installed across many other vineyards at Neethlinghof, that is a member of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI) and the plan is to extend their use even further. With 98% of South Africas water resources already fully allocated, there is an urgent need to do so, he says. "As a nation, we have got to uncouple growth from greater water consumption. At Neethlingshof we have made this a high priority. We are already aware that by adopting low-impact farming, there are other benefits too. It helps us combat erosion and reduce vulnerability to the threat of flood and fire."

Viljoen says that in a bid to conserve the integrity of the property and rehabilitate the indigenous habitat, the granite outcrops in and amongst the Malbec vineyards have been left undisturbed and that wild olives have taken root, supporting their own little ecosystems of indigenous insect life.

Neethlingshof also follows an integrated pest management programme with the introduction in recent years of caracal, owls and snakes on the farm.

Returning to the newly released wine, he says all but 15% of the final blend spent eight months in a combination of Hungarian and French oak barrels. "By including a portion of unwooded wine in the blend, we were able to amplify its vibrant fruit characters. When it came to wooding, we applied a very light touch, with just 10% new barrels and the rest second-fill. We wanted the expressive black fruit, floral and savoury notes to come through very clearly and to my mind they have done just that.

"Even though the wine is relatively young, it is very plush and smooth on the palate with approachable tannins but it has been structured to age for at least five years."

The 2010 Malbec is available from selected stockists nationally and is expected to sell for around R 70.00 a bottle.

Mont Rochelle Wins Franschhoek Barrel Rolling Competition

Mont Rochelle Wins Franschhoek Barrel Rolling Competition | Wednesday, 20 July 2011

The Mont Rochelle team rolled into first place in last weekends Franschhoek Bastille FestivalBarrel Rolling competition for the second year running. Wine tourism has been identified as one of the fastest-growing and most lucrative sectors of the global tourism market by the Minister of Tourism, Marthinus van Schalkwyk.

Vindaba, which marks a new spirit of collaboration amongst tourism bodies, is intended as a launching pad to position South Africa on the world map of wine tourism. Forming part of a long-term strategy to boost wine tourism, the initiative represents a partnership between Wines of South Africa (WOSA) and SA Tourism, as well as the Wine Routes, Cape Town Tourism, Cape Town Routes Unlimited and the Department of Finance, Tourism and Economic Development of the Western Cape.

SA Tourisms global manager for events, Sugen Pillay, says wine tourism is an important part of South Africas leisure offering to travellers and that the wine industry should be supported by the tourism industry. South Africa offers a diverse and exciting range of tourism experiences. The Winelands bring a further degree of competitiveness to our industry. At the same time, local and international tourism can help to augment the revenue streams of the wine sector.

The organisers plan to turn Vindaba into a world-class event that will assume the status of a leading wine exhibition amongst the international wine and travel fraternities. It will also offer specialist seminars, focus on gastro-tourism and provide tailor-made wine tours for the international and domestic travel business fraternity.

Although conceived as a stand-alone event, it will be staged simultaneously with Cape Wine 2012 at the Cape Town Convention Centre. Cape Wine, hosted biennially by WOSA, exhibits a wide spectrum of South Africas wines and wine styles to the international wine trade, from buyers to importers and sommeliers in important export markets. It also attracts wine, travel and lifestyle media.

Cape Wine is considered the most successful international wine trade show in the Southern Hemisphere, and has been held every alternate year since 2000 with the exception of last year, given South Africas hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Next years Cape Wine will be the first in four years and will thus provide an important opportunity for the industry to update its markets on new developments. It is expected that some 320 wineries will exhibit.

"There is a natural synergy between Cape Wine and Vindaba," says WOSA CEO Su Birch, who has been one of the prime drivers to establish a coherent strategy to promote wine tourism that involves decision makers from the wider tourism sector. "As far as we know, this is the first initiative of its kind anywhere in the wine-producing world in which the wine and tourism sectors are jointly presenting a wine and wine tourism event.

"Not only will the two exhibitions feature many of the same producers but there are other common links. South Africa has been steadily building a domestic and global awareness for the range and excellence of its wines and is now considered a significant wine-producing country. With provenance playing such a strategic role in wine marketing, it makes sense to advance wine-related tourism, so wine lovers are actively encouraged to visit the source of the products they enjoy."

Birch believes wine tourism, which began in 1971 with the launching of the first wine route in Stellenbosch, also has the potential to create more jobs. The wine industry in its entirety currently provides employment for 275 000 people.

In another world first, both events will be staged as eco-friendly exhibitions, making use exclusively of recycled and recyclable materials. South Africa is already recognised as a world leader in eco-sustainable wine production. Now it plans to establish a similar reputation for wine tourism by marketing Vindaba as a green initiative.

Van Schalkwyk has identified South Africas wine tourism as central to marketing the country as an attractive long-haul destination. Speaking at a tourism stakeholder workshop in April, he said: Wine tourism is a vital product offering in South Africas tourism product as it helps improve the countrys competitiveness against destinations like Brazil, Australia, Kenya and Thailand.

Although Australia has a highly developed wine tourism industry, many of its wine regions are located far apart, unlike South Africa where production is concentrated mostly in the Western Cape.

Van Schalkwyk said travel and tourisms contribution to global GDP was expected to grow this year, despite the fragile world economy, and was projected to reach $ 5 990bn, while providing 258 million jobs.

The South African wine industry has an estimated annual turnover of R 22bn, with exports contributing R7bn and wine tourism, a further R 5bn.

Van Schalkwyk highlighted that with emerging countries becoming more popular travel destinations than their developed counterparts, South Africa was well placed to promote its tourism offerings. At the same time, the country could capitalise on the worlds steadily growing emergent middle class.

In Africa alone, the middle class has grown to around 300 million people, according to the African Development Bank.

Hundreds Dare To Bare All For Charity

Hundreds Dare To Bare All For Charity | Monday, 18 July 2011

The annual Wine Laid Bare photographic competition has once again drawn hundreds of entries. Whatever the reason for their extraordinariness, youll find a piece of bottled exceptionality in this years Nederburg Auction Private Collection category, which opens the second days bidding at this years event on September 16 and 17 at Nederburg in Paarl.

Introduced for the first time, the Private Collection category serves to accommodate exceptional wines that are available in extremely small quantities, from producers who have literally been treasuring their last few bottles for an event such as this. "Each wine included in this years selection of 14 items has an original story to tell that enhances the rarity, uniqueness and collectability of these wines"; says Nederburg Auction business manager Dalene Steyn.

A perfect example is the 1974 Cabernet Sauvignon from Rustenberg, the last vintage made by this wineries former owner/winemaker Reg Merriman Nicholson, and which, according to current owner Simon Barlow, was probably his best. "Most of this wine was in fact consumed at my sisters wedding - we do not even have a bottle in our wine library at Rustenberg, so it is extremely rare indeed". Simon believes that it is vintages like this one that show South Africa can make world class wines - a great reason to perhaps bid on the item himself, as he comments: http://youtu.be/HS5v6T7NKG0

An item that underpins the ultimate sense of occasion, marking a monumental period in our nations history, was specially bottled for the inauguration of former president Nelson Mandela. The 1994 Graham Beck MCC was made by Pieter Ferreira and is not easily available on the open market. One case of four 1.5 litre bottles, at a reserve price of R 1 000.00, will be sold.

One of the oldest South African bottled wines still available that features in the Private Collection line up is a spritely 1930 Red Muscadel Jerepigo from KWV. Despite its age, this wine still displays an astonishing freshness with an amazing array of flavours, including spicy and herbal naunces. Just six bottles of this 81-year-old wine will be offered at a reserve price of R1 200. Staying with the grandfathers of South African wines, a fantastic matured wine from the 60s comes from Chateau Libertas, the original trendsetter for blended natural wines in South Africa more than 70 years ago. One case of just three bottles of the 1961 vintage, at a reserve price of R 3 000.00, will be sold.

Dalene concludes; "Buyers who bid on the Private Collection wines at the start of the Saturday auction on September 17 will not only be buying a special wine they will also be purchasing their own special piece of bottled exclusivity."

The complete list of this years Private Collection wines is on the auction website and also listed in this years official catalogue, available for electronic download: www.nederburgauction.co.za

The complete Private Collection Wine listing as it appears in the official catalogue is as follows (complete details, including reserve price, are available on the auction website):

Chateau Libertas 1961
Graham Beck Brut MCC 1994
Overgaauw Tria Corda 1983
Kanonkop Pinotage Black Label 2007
Delheim Grand Reserve 1984
Ken Meinert Chenin 2004 2007
Rustenberg Cabernet Sauvignon 1974
KWV Red Muscadel Jerepigo 1930
Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon Gift Pack 1997 2008
De Wetshof Finesse Chardonnay 1993
Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve Gift Pack 1986 1991
Alto Cabernet Sauvignon 1971
Zonnebloem Cabernet 1961
Nederburg Private Bin Edelkeur 1979

Rijks Private Cellar Pinotage 2007 Takes The Trophy. Again. | Monday, 11 July 2011

Chairman of the Trophy Wine Show, Michael Fridjhon, announced last week that our Pinotage 2007, just released and awarded 95 points, received the Trophy for the Best Pinotage of the show. 1070 wines were entered in the competition. A Gold Medal is described as "superlative, world class". Three Pinotages are produced at Rijks. Pinotage Touch of Oak - lightly wooded with exceptional fruit, Pinotage Private Cellar - full bodied and complex, and Pinotage Reserve.

Publication from Icon Trophy Wine Show Book 2011

In Dutch the word rijk means rich - a perfect description of how Tulbagh producer Rijks Private Cellar has been blessed with the quality produced here. Last year saw Rijks celebrate its first decade. With owner Neville Dorrington and winemaker Pierre Wahl, this go-getting cellar has notched up many prestigious awards for both reds and whites, showing a distinct versatility and obvious skill across the board.

Last years Trophy Wine Show saw the team winning the Trophy for the Best Chenin Blanc. But its our proudly home grown variety, Pinotage which first cemented Rijks Private Cellar as a serious contender for SAs Pinotage crown. Numerous accolades over the years attest to a passion for this variety.

When Dorrington purchased the property he was adamant he would plant Pinotage with the aim of producing a world class food wine. Wahl insists its become his favourite variety - with Chenin Blanc and Shiraz.Wahl travelled to the States to study the Californians approach to Pinot Noir - the variety crossed with Cinsaut which together produce this indigenous South African grape. He prefers the use of open fermenters, cold maceration prior to fermentation and malolactic fermentation in barrels.

The fruit for this wine is exclusively from Rijks vineyards and was handpicked in the cool of the night to retain freshness and flavour. The result is a wine with a deep ruby red colour. On the nose, expect a complex infusion of cherry and plum. These red fruit aromas carry through to the palate, supported by a full concentration of well integrated tannin and oak. Wahl recommends one to decant this wine prior to serving and, for those with patience and cellaring capacity, it has 15 or more years of ageing potential. "Reflecting elegance, finesse, complexity and concentrated fruit, this wine embodies the character of the cultivar and our soils, and perfectly represents the hallmarks of Rijks Private Cellar wines," says Wahl.

Having supplemented their Pinotage plantings last year the team is confident that their future, and that of this iconic variety, is looking very rosy indeed. Statistics based on feedback received from visitors and exhibitors showed sales achieved during the show increasing by 162% and almost hitting the half-million rand mark with a near capacity crowd of over 3100 visitors attending the three-day wine extravaganza.

"The second edition of the show in Nelson Mandela Bay has proven without a doubt that the Eastern Cape is a wine market to be reckoned with. The results in terms of expenditure and footfall are self explanatory, but the exhibitors were overwhelmed by the buying power of local wine lovers," mentions show director John Woodward.

Post-show statistics revealed that the average spend per visitor was just under R 1 000.00, which compares well with the expenditure of visitors at the flagship show in Johannesburg. Of the reported 5950 bottles of wine sold over the weekend, 52% fell into R50 R100 per bottle price range with 12% exceeded the R 100.00 per bottle price tag. "Although we had a large percentage of novice visitors (52% of which had never attended a wine show in the past), it was encouraging to see that visitors were not only keen to improve their wine knowledge and to experiment with different wines, but also eager to spend money on wines. With such an audience response, it is definitely no surprise that all our current exhibitors have already indicated that they will certainly be back for the 2012 show," states Woodward.

As South Africas fastest growing series of consumer wine shows, The Wine Show is the only event platform that surveys both its visitors and exhibitors to identify trends and assess performance. This has proven extremely useful as a benchmark for making marketing decisions when promoting wines.

The Wine Show Road Show NMB has partnered with Eastern Cape radio station Algoa FM for the past two years. According to Algoa FM marketing manager Toinette Koumpan, they were delighted with the public response and growth in this years show. "The Wine Show Road Show Nelson Mandela Bay is a brilliant addition to the Eastern Cape events calendar and fits in perfectly with the lifestyle of our listeners"

For more information, visit www.wineshow.co.za

Fleur du Cap Brings Home International Wine Challenge Trophy from London

Fleur du Cap Brings Home International Wine Challenge Trophy from London | Monday, 11 July 2011

Still basking in London glory after a spate of gold medals earlier this year, Fleur du Cap has triumphed once again by bringing home a Trophy from the International Wine Challenge for its award winning Unfiltered Semillon.

Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Semillon 2010, one of two Fleur du Cap wines to scoop gold medals at the highly contested 2011 International Wine Challenge, is also the proud winner of the International Wine Challenge 2011 Western Cape Trophy. Due to the limited production of this wine, it is almost impossible to find some of the older vintages on the open market and a case of the historic 10-year line of the development of this limited wine is a rarity. Columella is a blend of Syrah and Mourvedre, and is, says Eben; a true wine of terroir that has always been about place above progress.

The charity sale offers unusual wine items, many of them collectors items. Alongside the Columella collection is the last of three sets of Nederburg Tribute Shiraz 2007, specially created by visionary Nederburg cellarmaster Razvan Macici to mark the 35th anniversary of the Nederburg Auction and 350 years of wine at the Cape in 2009.

As well as impressive local wines, the charity auction is privileged to have several top-ranking foreign wines included in this years line-up. Donated by Swedish wine personalities Britt and Janke Johansson is one of the most exclusive, sought after sweet wines in the world a 375ml bottle of Oremus Tokaji Eszencia 2000, of which just a few hundred bottles were made. Hungarys world-famous Tokaji, often referred to in literature as the wine of kings and the king of wines, is incredibly difficult to forget once tasted. Although very sweet, with a residual sugar content of 468 grams per litre, the enormous acidity perfectly balances this beautiful nectar, offering a spectacular richness and an unequalled flavour.

Another international item, donated by Auctioneer Anthony Barne MW, is also a dessert wine that is a First Growth from the Sauternes, Gironde region in the southern part of the Bordeaux vineyards known as Graves. The acclaimed Chateau dYquem 1986 vintage, made from noble late harvest grapes, was given a 98-point rating in Robert Parkers Wine Advocate of January 1998.

One of the doyens of SA wine, Duimpie Bayly, has donated three extraordinary old wines from the Distell tabernacle, including a two-bottle collection from the 70s that come from the acclaimed McWilliams winery in Australia. It also received a Special Prize for best wine of the Southern Hemisphere.

About 150 wines from ten countries were submitted and judged by some 40 international Malbec specialists. This is a unique competition for an original vine and only 10 gold and 20 silver medals were awarded in total.

The Malbec vine, which was once cultivated by only about 30 growers in France, was favoured by Kings and known as Black Wine by the English. It nearly disappeared due to the ravages of phylloxera, but can now be found in about ten wine-growing countries of the world.

The Competition is dedicated to the Malbec varietal. The aims are to highlight its very specific sensory qualities, to widen consumer knowledge of the diversity of the wine, to support the producers and to commercialise the wines produced in the many diverse terroir around the world.

Cellarmaster Niel Bester, who also received the South African Terroir Award in 2010 for his Plaisir de Merle Cabernet Franc 2008, says: "My aim with Plaisir de Merle wines has always been to produce site-specific wines portraying the true terroir of the farm. This international award for the Southern Hemisphere terroir for my Malbec 2008 indicates that we are achieving a true sense of place for Plaisir de Merle wines."

The grapes for Plaisir de Merle Malbec 2008 came from a single 10-year-old vineyard. It was matured in 100% French oak barrels for periods ranging for 16 months. Finally Bester tasted all the individual barrels and evaluated them to select the final blend. This wine has a vibrant red colour and a bouquet teeming with violets, and blackcurrants. It is medium to full-bodied with a soft and velvety palate laced with ripe fruit and supported by vanilla oak flavours. Only 330 cases of this extraordinary wine were made and is available in limited quantities from the tasting centre at the farm and sold internationally.

Visit Plaisir de Merle: www.plaisirdemerle.co.za
